Quick Take
Urwerk is giving a curtain call to one of its models, the UR-210. The original UR-210, nicknamed the Maltese Falcon, debuted in 2012. Eight years after the release of that watch, the brand is marking the end of the model's run with the Urwerk UR-210 Last Edition. This new watch is cased in titanium and steel with black PVD coating. The dial is black and ruthenium-coated with lume-filled red numerals on the hands. The dial is further accented with green and orange indexes, and the watch comes fitted on a black leather strap.
Initial Thoughts
We have covered the UR-210 quite a few times over the years (here, here, and here), and there is not really any difference, technically speaking, between this edition and earlier iterations. It still boasts the uniquely shaped sapphire crystal, dual power indication displays, hour satellites, case design, and the host of incredible features and functionality.
The UR-210 Last Edition sports the signature retrograde hand that docks with the hour satellites while indicating the minutes. When the minute hand flies back from 60 to zero, it produces a sharp "clack" which signals the beginning of each new hour. The watch features a patented winding efficiency indicator (in addition to the power reserve indicator) which allows the user to know if they have generated enough power over the last two hours of use to keep the UR-210’s mainspring sufficiently wound. This is displayed on the dial with an arrow that fluctuates between green and red.
This feature is tailored to the user and adjustable based upon how much you move. You have the ability to adjust the rotor on the caseback to ensure it works for your everyday use. The rotor can also be set to effectively zero, allowing the watch to be used as a manual wind. This is the kind of watch feature that is far better seen than explained, and you can check out this Hands-On we did with the original UR-210 here, which illustrates the watch's many unique functions.
In reaching the end of the line for the model, it bears looking back at the original UR-210 Maltese Falcon. Why that nickname? Well, as we have noted before, the minute hand of the original model was inspired by the beak of the mythical bird. You can still see that motif continued onto the Last Edition. If this is the last we see of the UR-210, then it stands as a truly remarkable piece of contemporary watchmaking – or as Sam Spade once noted, "the stuff dreams are made of."
