What We Know
Named for the abbreviation of Mean Sea Level, this is Serica's newly announced Ref. 6190 M.S.L. With new dial colors, applied markings, and a new handset, the 6190 M.S.L forms Serica's latest spin on their mid-century-inspired take on a classic '50s field watch and it comes on a steel Bonklip bracelet to complete that old-school look.
Building upon the recently updated standard spec of the 6190, the M.S.L retains the same 37.7mm steel case. Thickness is 10.4mm, and the lug to lug is just 46.5mm. The lug width is 20mm, water resistance is 200 meters, the crown screws down, and the crystal is sapphire. Inside and supporting the time-only function set, we find a Swiss-made Soprod M100 automatic, which is COSC certified, has 42 hours of power reserve, and ticks at 4 Hz.
The M.S.L story is one that is largely formed around aesthetic changes to the 6190, with the M.S.L model offering three distinct colorways – enamel black, storm grey, and polar white. This is the first time Serica has offered the 6190 in white since 2019 and the first time ever for the warm grey coloring. All three models feature the brand's specific take on the dial design with an interior-placed marker set that is surrounded by a minute track. For the M.S.L, Serica has opted for applied markers (rather than painted), and the handset has been updated to include a luminous seconds hand.
All three colorways come with steel Bonklip bracelets, and you can specify small, regular, or XL to ensure the perfect fit from the quick (and very comfortable) design. The 6190 M.S.L goes on sale today via Serica for 1,090 EUR (~$1,182 at the time of publishing).
What We Think
I have reviewed several of Serica's watches over the past few years, and I think that the M.S.L represents a move that is both strong and subtle. Serica is not known to be a flashy brand – they don't even put their name on the dial of their watches – and the applied markers and additional colorways look excellent in the modern 6190 case. Additionally, I like seeing 200 meters of water resistance in a field watch, and I really like the way that the case design suits the Bonklip bracelet.
Furthermore, the sizing is great for just about any wrist (I've worn previous 6190 examples with the same case), and those applied markers really add some depth to the dial and an elegance that, to my eyes, aligns nicely with the Serica vibe.
Furthering 2024's apparent trend towards subtle refinement from many brands, the 6190 M.S.L doesn't reinvent the wheel for Serica. But it does add depth to a range of watches that have a strong following and offer a unique and handsome take on the continually strong trend towards vintage inspiration in modern sports watch design.
