What We Know
H. Moser & Cie never settles. From vantablack to pixelated eraser dials, this is a watch company on a mission. And over the past four years I have witnessed its reputation and recognition grow exponentially. It has managed to balance the absolute most bonkers ideas with a real knack for developing a sound identity with watches like the Streamliner line. Today the Art Deco locomotive-inspired watch gets very serious.
This is the Pioneer Tourbillon Skeleton and it's taking dead aim at the likes of AP. And where a brand like that pulls heavily from the design template of one Mr. Gerald Genta, Moser's design is, and has been, quintessentially Moser.
What we have with this release is a steel 40mm (great size, check) case at a mere 12.1mm thick that gives way to an entirely skeletonized dial, and by virtue of that fact, the movement itself.
In creating the look of this "dial," Moser did its best to strip away all unnecessary elements to deliver what they call a minimalist skeleton – if that's even possible, but looking at it, I get it.
Within this creation is a one-minute flying tourbillon with a double hairspring that gives off the impression that it is freely floating, Affixed to the recognizable Streamliner bracelet, this watch will cost $86,900.
What We Think
If you know me and my taste in watches writ large, this might come as a surprise to you, but I am into this one – big time. There has always been something about the streamliner and its deco-vintage aesthetic that felt like something you might've seen at a World's Fair in the 1930s or a concept watch of the era that somehow took almost a century to make real.
And this particular watch, to say nothing of the fact that it's a skeleton that looks to be remarkably legible, gives off a certain steampunk vibe. And I mean that as a compliment. This feels like it was pulled out of a Guillermo Del Toro movie or Snowpiercer. It's both futuristic and timeless and lives up to the Moser name because it takes a well-known format and brings something truly new to it.
I'll be saying this a lot in my write-ups for the show, but this is a watch that demands an in-person viewing, which I have yet to have. So stay tuned for my thoughts once I've had a chance to handle this new Skeleton Streamliner Tourbillon.
