Even in the case of my friends who exist firmly outside the bounds of this niche hobby, Longines is one of the few brands that have firmly made it onto their radar (even if it's just in its association with the recent Jennifer Lawerence campaign). Given the whole founded-in-1832 factor, the early history of Longines history could be an entire essay in and of itself. In the middle of the 20th century, Longines was an absolute powerhouse. With this balance in mind, I've rounded up my favorite watches from Longines currently available in the Shop, from the vintage-inspired and the modern tool watches to selections decidedly in between. The great strength of this piece is its exquisite balancing of elements that, if treated less carefully, have the potential to crash when put all together. When I hear about a two-tone watch with an equally vibrant dial, my first impulse is that even for me it sounds like a lot going on. One aspect of this is a shift both metaphorically and physically – the movement has been literally shifted 30 degrees from its predecessor to achieve a greater sense of visual harmony, as well as to show off the richly textured finish of the newly decorated bridgework. While the green dial detail on the 2020 model is a familiar callback to the original vintage model, it is nice to see the brand experiment with color combinations to bring this heritage-inspired timepiece into the contemporary age. You've got all that tasty '70s appeal on the outside, a Swiss-made automatic caliber on the inside, and, best of all, the sub-$ $1,000 price tag. While I'm partial to the all-yellow-gold iterations of the PRX, this combination of stainless steel with the dark blue waffle dial feels to me like the most obvious, sporty, and classically integrated-bracelet-watch models of the bunch. I'll admit much of that excitement (especially my own sense of excitement) is derived from that mesmerizing dial. This watch will also look different depending upon the context you subject it to – if you are wearing this thing frequently by the sea and underwater, it will age differently than if you spend most of your time in the city. Additionally, you have the option to polish the case to your liking, allowing you to lean into its ability to shine almost like gold. With one recurring task, she'd pour a few handfuls of dirty pennies on a placemat and have me spend the afternoon polishing them with vinegar. Given that I was a rather eccentric child, this mundane chore didn't bore me to tears – there was a lot of satisfaction in renewing the copper pennies to their rosy sheen. Looking back, I can only think that this was sort of a zen exercise in patience, in taking care of the little things around you, no matter how small. Confronted with the technological problem of crafting an alarm complication that was both slim enough to fit within the small case of a wristwatch and loud enough to wake a deep sleeper, engineers at Vulcain were stumped on this feat for over two years. As fate would have it, a walk through the Swiss countryside would lead to a new source of inspiration for the engineers as the loud cries of crickets rose through the tall grass. This realization of the humble cricket's power – its ability to create lots of noise despite its small stature – led to an unexpected breakthrough in invention, and thus, the Vulcain Cricket was born. Now, that's the kind of vivid storytelling that just tugs at your imagination, huh?
